Style Idea: Snip Your Braids

— September 02, 2020

Snipping your braids: a concept. We love this quick style switcharoo Black Panther star Danai Gurira pulled after the 2019 Oscars. She wore a gorgeous braided look to the actual academy awards, but decided to simply cut the braids into this chic bob for the post-awards parties. Here are three quick tips to doing it yourself. 1. STICK TO A FIXED BRAIDED LOOK: This might not work as well with loose box braids. Because Danai's hair is cornrowed in the front, the look is already set, and snipping the braids wouldn't compromise the style. 2. CUT MUCH LOWER THAN YOUR INTENDED BOB LENGTH: When attempting to create this look, do NOT cut at the exact point where you want the bob to fall. Cut several inches lower than that so you have room to style. Unravel up to a certain point and cut into your intended look. 3. USE HAIRSPRAY AT THE "BRAID BREAK": If you're concerned about your braids unraveling all the way up, spritz quite a bit of strong hold hairspray at the point where braids end and the unraveling begins. Use a blowdryer to quickly dry and set. Photo: Courtesy of Instagram.
